Today, June 30, 2016, the Ubuntu Kylin developers have announced the release of the first Alpha build of the upcoming Ubuntu Kylin 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) operating system.

We've told you earlier that Ubuntu 16.10 is now in development, and a first Alpha build has been released for opt-in flavors, namely Ubuntu MATE, Lubuntu, and Ubuntu Kylin. We've already written in-depth articles about the new features included in the Ubuntu MATE 16.10 Alpha 1 and Lubuntu 16.10 Alpha 1 releases, so it's time to talk a little about Ubuntu Kylin 16.10 Alpha 1.

"In this pre-release, we have fixed many internationalization and localization bugs in Ubuntu itself and bugs in software written by the Ubuntu Kylin team. All the work that Ubuntu Kylin team do is within the Ubuntu community and ecosystem and as such they are flowed back to Ubuntu itself naturally and everyone using Ubuntu can benefit the result of our work," reads today's announcement.

Still powered by Linux kernel 4.4 LTS

Shipping with the same Linux 4.4 LTS kernel packages as Ubuntu Kylin 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus), the first Alpha build of Ubuntu Kylin 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) doesn't include any major changes, only some bug fixes and various updated packages. The release notes contain information only about the known issues, which will be removed till the final release of the operating system on October 13, 2016.

If you want an early taste of what's coming to Ubuntu Kylin 16.10 later this year, it's probably best to wait for the first Beta release, as this Alpha doesn't contain any major changes. However, you can still download the ISO images for 64-bit and 32-bit computers right now via our website, but please don't use it as your daily driver.
