The developers of the Ubuntu-based Peppermint OS distribution have released today the first respin of the Peppermint OS 8 series.

Launched earlier this year on May 28, Peppermint OS 8 is based on the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system and brought major new features. Now, the Peppermint 8 Respin is here with a bunch of improvements and the latest software releases, including the Nemo 3.4.7 file manager, OpenVPN 2.4.4 VPN implementation, and Linux kernel 4.10.0-40.

"I should probably explain here that some people have suggested the 4.10 kernel series is no longer supported, whilst this may be true for the vanilla kernel please rest assured the Ubuntu 4.10 kernel from the HWE (as used here) is fully supported upstream and will be until you’re automatically rolled onto the 4.13 kernel)," explained Mark Greaves.

What's new in Peppermint 8 Respin

In addition to the latest updates from upstream, Peppermint 8 Respin introduces new "Pepirus" xfwm4, GTK+, and icon themes, replaces lightdm-gtk-greeter with slick-greeter, improves the i3lock lock screen app, disables GTK+ overlay scrollbars, makes the default terminal window a bit larger, adds mint-translations, and fixes peppermint-proxy-configuration for the 32-bit ISO image.

Another interesting change is the implementation of a desktop right-click context menu item called "Open Peppermint Settings Panel," which will help you access the Peppermint Settings Panel if you accidentally deleted the xfce4-panel and use the "Panel reset" option to restore the panel to its default state. Also, tweaked versions of the neofetch and screenfetch tools are now available in the repos and will display the Peppermint logo.

By popular demand, the Advert Blocker has been reinstalled in Peppermint 8 Respin and it's now available from the Applications Menu. Other than that, three new wallpapers from Ray Bilcliff have been added and the default one was changed to Peppermint-3D-Logo-Alternative. You can download Peppermint 8 Respin for 64-bit or 32-bit computers right now from our website.
