14 DAY TRIAL // LXLE developer Ronnie Whisler announced the general availability of the final release of his Ubuntu-based LXLE 16.04.2 "Eclectica" computer operating system.
Being based on the Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS (Xenial Xerus) release, LXLE 16.04.2 includes numerous improvements over previous versions. The OS is far from perfect, says the developer, but with every new release, there are more tweaks and optimizations to make the entire LXLE desktop experience even more enjoyable for all of us.
"Extensive work on the menu system was a major focus this release. As well as fixing bugs and errors that existed prior," reads the release announcement. "Everything has been streamlined even more so, such as the included 'PPAs', default software and even the menu system itself went on a 'diet'."
What's new in LXLE 16.04.2 "Eclectica"
Among the new features included in the LXLE 16.04.2 "Eclectica" release, we can mention reconfigured layout of the Applications Menu, completely revamped Control Menu, which now acts as a dynamic Control Panel, use of the Zenburn theme for custom terminal color scheme, and a more uniform look and feel.
The Synaptic Package Manager tool has been reconfigured to show more features and be a bit easier to use by newcomers, Ubuntu's proposed repository was removed, the Btrfs file system is supported by default, and it looks like there's out-of-the-box support for automatic detection of multi-monitor configurations.
Other changes worth mentioning here are a new Expose-like window picker, implementation of the i3lock screen locker with autoblur, Aero-like window snap feature, addition of various Assistive Technology apps, a new terminal-based weather app, a collection of 100 wallpapers, and a wallpaper changer utility.
