Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth has revealed today the codename of the next long-term support release of the Ubuntu Linux operating system, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, due for release in late April 2018.

Following the tradition of naming upcoming Ubuntu release, Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth wrote a blog post today welcoming the Ubuntu 17.10 (Artful Aardvark) release and congratulating all those involved in its development process, and announcing the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS release as the "Bionic Beaver."

"In honour of that tireless toil, our mascot this cycle is a mammal known for it’s energetic attitude, industrious nature and engineering prowess. We give it a neatly nerdy 21st century twist in honour of the relentless robots running Ubuntu Core. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you 18.04 LTS, the Bionic Beaver," says Mark Shuttleworth.

Ubuntu 18.04 LTS "Bionic Beaver" launches April 2018

While Mark Shuttleworth didn't actually reveal Canonical's plans for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, except for the fact that more work will be put into Ubuntu Snappy Core system for IoT (Internet of Things) devices, it looks like the release schedule has been published suggesting the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS release date as April 26, 2018.

Development starts in only two days, on October 26, when the toolchain is uploaded to the archives, and Ubuntu 18.04 LTS "Bionic Beaver" will follow the same scheme as its predecessors, which means that there will be two Alpha and two Beta releases published during the six-month development cycle.

According to the release schedule, the first Alpha milestone is expected on January 4, 2018, and the second Alpha should arrive on February 1st, but only for the opt-in flavors. On March 8, the opt-in flavors do their first Beta release, and the Final Beta is hitting the streets on April 5, 2018.
