The Ubuntu Kernel Team at Canonical has published a new installation of their weekly newsletter, where they inform Ubuntu Linux users about the latest work done on the kernel packages of the upcoming operating system.

Last week, the Ubuntu Kernel Team reported on the fact that the Linux kernel 4.4 LTS packages remained in the ubuntu-unstable repository and that they would upload their first Linux 4.4-based kernel to the stable archive for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS after cleaning some of the DKMS packages.

In today's newsletter, they announce that the master-next branch of Xenial Xerus has been rebased on the long-term supported Linux 4.4 kernel, which will be pushed to the stable repository by the end of the week. Right now, the Linux kernel 4.4 LTS packages are waiting in the ubuntu-proposed channel.

"Our xenial master-next branch has been re-based to the v4.4 kernel. This kernel has been uploaded and is currently sitting in -proposed while we fix up some ADT test failures. We hope for this kernel to be promoted before the end of this week," Ubuntu kernel developers explain.

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is powered by Linux kernel 4.4 LTS

Having an LTS (Long-Term Support) kernel for an LTS version of Ubuntu is one of the smartest things Canonical and Ubuntu developers have done in a long time, not to mention the fact the Ubuntu is finally shipping with a recent kernel version, the latest and most advanced one at the moment of the launch.

So it is safe to say that Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) is powered by Linux kernel 4.4 LTS. Yes, we knew that from the start, but now it's official, and the final Linux kernel 4.4 LTS packages will soon arrive for those who have jumped ship to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and are currently on the bleeding edge.
