All Alpha 2 users should get the update as we speak

It's finally here! We know that we've told you so many times about the fact that the upcoming Ubuntu 16.04 LTS operating system will get the long-term supported Linux 4.4 kernel someday, but that day is today, February 1, 2016.

Just a few minutes ago, Canonical pushed the final Linux kernel 4.4 LTS packages into the stable repositories of the upcoming distribution for early adopters like us to upgrade and replace the old Linux 4.3 kernel from the Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) release.

We upgraded one of our machines to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (actually, it was a fresh install) and monitored the software repositories several times a day just for this reason, to inform our dedicated readers when the upcoming operating system is getting the latest and most advanced Linux kernel.

At the end of the article, you can find a few screenshots showing the download and install progress of the new Linux kernel 4.4 LTS packages, and we can confirm that, after a reboot, everything works smoothly. The upgrade process from Linux kernel 4.3 was a success.

Canonical tracks the development of Linux kernel 4.4 LTS

Of course, things don't stop here, as the Ubuntu Kernel Team at Canonical is dedicated to tracking the development cycle of the long-term supported Linux 4.4 kernel, which just received its first maintenance release last evening, January 31, 2016, bringing users the latest kernel technologies as they are released.

One thing we never liked about Ubuntu and its method of showing the kernel packages is that, no matter how many updates it gets, it's always displayed with the initial version number (e.g. 4.4.0-x-generic). It would have been nice and more informative to see the real version number on which the kernel is based, such as 4.4.1 or 4.4.2.
