Today, April 22, 2016, Canonical has had the great pleasure of announcing the general availability of its Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system for IBM z Systems and LinuxONE mainframe computers.

After being in development for the past six months, the new long-term supported version of the Ubuntu Linux operating system has been officially released for desktop, server, and cloud on 64-bit (amd64), 32-bit (i386), ARM64 (AArch64), ArmHardFloat (armhf), as well as PowerPC Little Endian (PPC64el) architectures on April 21, 2016.

And today, Canonical is proud to announce the s390x port of its Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, which can be installed on IBM's z System and LinuxONE servers, providing developers and system administrators with an ideal platform for all of their cloud computing needs, including OpenStack cloud deployments.

"The leading cloud-based operations and the most advanced robotics run largely on Ubuntu, and this new release is the basis for the next wave of their innovation," said Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Canonical. "We are proud to serve the needs of the enterprise, and research, and millions of personal and non-profit users, with one single shared free software platform."

The platform of choice for running modern cloud-native apps

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) incorporates the latest and greatest GNU/Linux technologies, and Canonical guarantees the same great Ubuntu experience to the mainframe community when installing and running the Linux kernel-based operating system on IBM LinuxONE and IBM z Systems servers.

"As more enterprises adopt hybrid cloud, they are looking for new platforms that run Linux with efficiency and flexibility," said Ross A. Mauri, general manager, IBM z Systems and LinuxONE. "With the release of Ubuntu 16.04, IBM will be able to offer our LinuxONE clients a simple, affordable high-performance Linux distribution that will better equip them to take advantage of hybrid cloud."

Anyone can freely download the ISO images of the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Server operating system for s390x hardware architectures, but Canonical has priced the OS at $19,500 per drawer per year, providing customers with 24x7 Ubuntu Advantage Advanced support services, reliability fixes, and regular security updates. If you are interested in running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on IBM LinuxONE and z Systems, you can register now for the "Discover the Cloud and Scale Out World of Ubuntu on IBM" webinar on April 27.
