The night feature on Twitter cannot be turned off

Google removed the system-level dark mode in Android N Developer Preview 3, but applications can still switch between day and night modes. Developers can design their apps to switch based on the time of day and current location. Twitter seems to have jumped on the bandwagon, and it is currently A/B testing a night mode in the alpha version of its application, according to 9to5Google.

The night mode switches between white and dark blue background colors, based on the hour and time of day. However, users won’t have the option to manually revert to white or dark night mode. This could be quite inconvenient, since not all users appreciate the automatic change to another background color.

Twitter implemented the night mode on top of the Material design of its app, and the Android application makes use of tabs for the Timeline, Notifications, Messages, and Moments so that they are arranged in a more intuitive way.

Some other changes are visible in the alpha version of Twitter, some variants come with a hamburger slide out while others have a three-dot overflow menu to access the user profile and other settings. Two variants of the same feature in an alpha app version usually point to A/B testing. Twitter also reverted to using Floating Action Buttons for composing new tweets.

Twitter is using the new feature found in the Android Support Library

However, it seems that Twitter hasn’t even made any official announcements on the Material redesign of its Android app, but it’s clear that the company is using the new feature found in the Android Support Library.

The new features are visible only to a few Twitter app users, and the company might even integrate more controls before launching the final stable version. The APK for the alpha A/B testing Twitter version is rolled out server side, which means that it’s not available to regular users.
