Total War: Warhammer will deliver a big set of changes to the traditional formula of the strategy series, and the development team at The Creative Assembly and publisher SEGA are ready to give fans a look at some of them in the first gameplay-focused trailer for the title.

The ten minutes of footage show the Battle of Black Fire Pass, which has been featured in previous promotional content, with gamers able to take a look at the scripted engagement between the forces of the Empire and those of the Orcs.

The Creative Assembly says that this is the first look at Total War: Warhammer that is unedited and features a full look at pre-alpha graphics and mechanics.

The Battle of Black Fire Pass features big armies for both sides and also features combat between Emperor Karl Franz and Orc Warboss Grimgor Ironhide.

The development team adds, "The in-game capture, accompanied by developer commentary, offers an early glimpse at some of the fantastical battlefield units, spells, war machines, and monstrous creatures that will appear in the final game."

The engagement is important because it shows off the new quest mechanics associated with the Great Lords that will be featured for each faction.

Total War: Warhammer will tweak both strategic and tactical layers

The Games Workshop universe represents the first time that the franchise from The Creative Assembly is moving away from actual history.

The team says that it wants to stay as true to the fantasy setting as possible, allowing gamers to control a variety of unique units and heroes, while offering mechanics that can portray the plots and battles of the world.

The Battle of the Black Fire Pass footage shows how varied the included sides are and how powerful heroes can be, especially when compared to the more normal units that they face.

Games will even be able to use magic to control certain portions of the battlefield, although it seems that physical might is still more important for those who want to be victorious.

More gameplay footage from the title will probably be offered as the game gets demoed at Gamescom in the coming week.

Total War: Warhammer will be out on the PC at some point in 2016.
