Immediately after the release of the Tails 2.7 anonymous Live CD, the Tor Project was pleased to announce the official availability of Tor Browser 6.0.6 open-source and cross-platform web browser for surfing the Web anonymously.

Tor Browser 6.0.6 is a minor, yet necessary maintenance update to the 6.x series of the Firefox-based browser, adding support for the latest stable TOR 0.2.8.9 anonymous network, as well as the latest Mozilla technologies. Tor Browser 6.0.6 is here one and a half months after the 6.0.5 point release and it looks like it's based on Firefox 45.5.0 ESR (Extended Support Release).

"We fixed a lot of usability bugs, some caused by Apple's macOS Sierra," reads the announcement. "We moved directly to DuckDuckGo as our search engine avoiding a roundtrip to Disconnect.me first. Finally, we added a donation banner shown in some localized bundled starting on Nov 23 in order to point to our end-of-the-year 2016 donation campaign."

HTTPS-Everywhere 5.2.7 and OpenSSL 1.0.1u are included

Among other goodies included in the Tor Browser 6.0.6 point release, which was integrated into the recently released Tails 2.7 amnesic incognito live system, we can mention the HTTPS-Everywhere 5.2.7 and OpenSSL 1.0.1u technologies for improved security when browsing the Web, as well as Torbutton 1.9.5.12, Tor Launcher 0.2.9.4, and Meek 0.25.

For Mac users, Tor Browser 6.0.6 adds better support for the macOS Sierra 10.12 operating system by addressing some Meek and Go issues, thus allowing users to drag windows again. Under the hood, the build system was upgraded to Go 1.7.3, and it looks like the default search engine was finally switched to DuckDuckGo for better privacy. Download Tor Browser 6.0.6 for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Microsoft Windows right now.
