The number of browser extensions available for Microsoft’s new Edge is growing, and today a new ad blocker officially gets support for the default Windows 10 browser.

uBlock Origin, which is one very popular Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox ad blocker, now works on Microsoft Edge too, thanks to an early preview of the extension that can now be installed by Windows 10 users.

Same features as on Google Chrome

The extension is already available in the Windows Store, though you should note that it’s still in preview, so some issues might still be experienced. The developer says that work on this extension advances nicely, so future updates should improve stability and reliability on Edge.

“This port is almost finished, but not quite. There are a few issues I know about that have fixes on the way. There are likely to be more that I’m unaware of because they fall outside my day-to-day use,” the developer said in a post on Medium.

“Roughly 95% of the code (the parts that control the blocking and filtering logic and everything you see as a user) is the exact same code that runs on Chrome and Firefox. The part that’s different is the layer that interfaces directly with the browser. Even then it’s heavily based on Chrome’s version because the Edge team have done a great job of matching compatibility with Chrome’s APIs.”

uBlock Origin is one very popular Google Chrome extension mostly because it’s super lightweight and it doesn’t hamper system performance in a dramatic way.

Furthermore, it has all the features of more popular ad blockers, including filters and the possibility of whitelisting websites that you don’t want to block, and all these features are available in the Microsoft Edge version as well.

Keep in mind that this extension is still work in progress, so in case there’s something that doesn’t work as it’s supposed to, make sure you send your feedback via the Feedback Hub to have it improved in future updates.
