The iPhone 8 might indeed have a battery problem, but the only reports we’ve seen so far pointed to swelling batteries that inflated either in the box, so the customers noticed the defect when unboxing it, or when charging for the first time.

But today we came across what could be the very first report of an exploding iPhone equipped with a bad battery. Before everything, it’s important to note that this report comes from China and it includes very limited information as to how the whole incident took place and whether third-party accessories were used or not.

Chinese site OrientalDaily reports that a woman named Xiaomin got a 64GB iPhone 8 for her father and left it plugged in to charge overnight. She fell asleep and woke up in the morning to discover the iPhone 8 burnt on the nightstand with what appears to be a gigantic hole in the middle of the back cover where the battery would normally be.

She found the iPhone exploded in the morning

Oddly enough, most of the phones which experienced overheating in the past, including Samsung’s and Apple’s, burned the screen, but in this case, the display doesn’t appear to be pushed out of the frame. Instead, the back of the phone was seriously damaged, possibly as a result of an explosion.

While it’s a bit awkward that the woman didn’t wake up when the iPhone exploded, she says she noticed the iPhone 8 emitting some cracking sounds and smoke, as it was still plugged in. What she did was pour water on the phone and then remove the charger because water and electricity is a match made in heaven.

Later the same day when she returned from work she reached out to Apple, according to the Chinese report, but the company hasn’t issued a response just yet.

Obviously, if this report is indeed real then it could signal a major issue for the iPhone 8, though once again, there are many details in this story that don’t make much sense. And for what it’s worth, all reports revealing swollen batteries on the iPhone 8 pointed to the Plus model, whereas this is the standard 4.7-inch iPhone.
