They were only after the caps, police officers say

Over the weekend, a gang of thieves broke into a store in the city of Mülheim in Germany, popped open over 1,000 bottles of beer, and then left without indulging in at least one sip.

According to the law enforcement officers investigating the case, it was the caps they were after.

By the looks of it, the caps came with points and so the thieves stole them hoping to win prizes like a set of speakers, a cordless drill and the like, The Local informs.

“Apparently, they opened well over 1,000 bottles just to get to the tokens attached to the bottle caps,” police officers in Mülheim wrote in their report.

It is unclear whether they might have been tipped off by a store employee shortly before the break-in, but authorities say the thieves didn't waste their time when they got inside the establishment.

Rather, they headed straight to where the beer bottles included in the prize contest were stored.

Whatever caps weren't worth any points and instead merely wished consumers good luck trying again were simply abandoned on the floor. As noted, the thieves didn't drink be it one bottle.

An investigation is ongoing and law enforcement officers hope it won't be long until they catch the culprits. The brewery organizing the prize contest and the store's management have so far refused to comment on the incident.
