Microsoft says rollout actually started on October 17

Microsoft doesn’t talk too much about its mobile efforts these days, but when it does, it certainly provides critical information for those who are still sticking with the platform.

After Joe Belfiore recently confirmed that no new features and hardware for Windows 10 Mobile are on the radar, Microsoft’s Brandon LeBlanc confirmed on Twitter that the release of the Fall Creators Update for smartphones has already started and unlocked devices should get it this week.

Surprisingly, LeBlanc pointed out that the first devices received the Windows 10 Mobile Fall Creators Update on October 17 in Finland, but given the small number of Windows smartphones still out there, it’s more or less understandable why such news never made the headlines.

On the other hand, the good news is that everyone else should be getting the update as soon as this week, though the classic approach is still in place and availability depends on a number of factors, including region and carrier.

What’s new in Windows 10 Mobile Fall Creators Update?

The Windows 10 Mobile Fall Creators Update doesn’t bring an astonishing number of features, but it does include some pretty interesting goodies for enterprises.

For example, the new version introduces two-factor authentication for the platform, which allows enterprises to add an extra security system with an MDM policy. Additionally, the update also includes AppLocker improvements, as well as some VPN tweaks, like IKEv2 sleep and power refinements.

As for the devices that are considered eligible for the Windows 10 Mobile Fall Creators Update, only a few of them will actually get the new OS version, including just four Lumia models, namely the 550, 650, 950, and 950 XL. The HP Elite X3 will get the Fall Creators Update as well, and so will the Alcatel IDOL 4S.

The update is delivered though the system update screen, and make sure that you charge your device or plug it in before started deployment to successfully complete the install.
