Coship’s crowdfunding for new Windows phone now ended

A crowdfunding campaign launched by Coship, one of the manufacturers planning to launch a new Windows 10 Mobile device, failed after supporters showed only very little interest in supporting the effort and donating money for a new phone.

The IndieGogo page shows that the crowdfunding campaign was backed by only 30 people, who donated just $2,569, accounting for 3 percent of the $100,000 goal.

Coship hasn’t released any statement on this failed IndieGogo campaign, but information posted on the crowdfunding page shows that only one user donated $229 to receive a US version of the phone and 23 percent discount for a premium protective case and free shipping. Nobody donated for the European sibling of this package.

On the other hand, there were 5 people who supported the campaign with a $4 donation, while 8 IndieGoGo users pledged $5.

Why it failed

The first question that comes to everyone’s minds is why the campaign failed when Windows Phone has such a loyal user base that’s willing to support any effort aimed at the platform.

At first glance, the declining interest in Windows phones seems to be the main reason, as Microsoft itself fails to convince users to stick around for a little longer. The company has been mostly tight-lipped about Windows phones lately, choosing instead to express its commitment to Windows 10 Mobile.

There are rumors that the Lumia brand itself could be discontinued, and Microsoft is expected to release an announcement sometime soon, but without any official information, all this speculation does nothing more than to fuel the uncertainty harming the platform.

Coship, on the other hand, was ready to support Windows 10 Mobile despite all of these, but after this failed crowdfunding campaign, it’s difficult to say if the company still wants to release devices powered by Microsoft’s platform. Coship will attend the Mobile World Congress in February, so more information regarding the company’s plans are expected to be announced in a couple of months.
