Today, December 27, 2016, the development team behind the OpenMW open-source Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind engine reimplementation for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Windows operating systems proudly announced the release of OpenMW 0.41.0.

OpenMW 0.41.0 is yet another maintenance update that paves the way towards the major OpenMW 1.0 milestone, which promises to be the biggest release of the role-playing game. It comes three and a half months after the OpenMW 0.40.0 build and promises to implement a bunch of new features, but also to fix numerous issues reported by users.

"The OpenMW team is proud to announce the release of version 0.41.0! This release brings an assortment of small new features, such as a handful of graphical magical effects, and some new NPC AI behavior. We continue to plod along to a 1.0 release, stay tuned," reads today's release announcement.

Here's what's new in OpenMW 0.41.0

Prominent new features of OpenMW 0.41.0 include support for zero-weight boots to play light armor boot footsteps, the ability to play visual and audio effects for every effect in a spell, a brand-new AI Combat called Flee, as well as support for using telekinesis on objects with "on touch" spells.

The inventory was updated with player glow support for non-portable lights, drop shadow was added for all menu items, player control flags were implemented to the ESS Importer feature, water rendering and support for rotating and scaling sub-modes for instance editing mode was implemented to OpenMW-CS tool.

Other than that, OpenMW 0.41.0 doubles the size of spell explosions, adds particle textures for spell effects, implements NPCs which use an opponent’s weapon range to decide whether to dodge or not, along with dodging for creatures that contain the "biped" flag, and supports correct range for "on touch" spells.
