A good story can take over a decade to bring from paper to the big screen, and “The Revenant” is one such example. In development since 2001, it finally went into production last fall and is now ready for a December limited release. It will open wide in January 2016.

Directed by Alejandro G. Inarritu, who comes off his Best Director Oscar win last year with “Birdman,” “The Revenant” also pairs 2 of the most talented and popular actors of the moment, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy.

It’s also believed to be the vehicle that will finally get Leo that Oscar he so badly deserves and which the Academy has been refusing him for years.

Fans who have been waiting for this movie to be made since back in the day when Christian Bale and Samuel L. Jackson were signed for the leads, can finally get a first taste of what’s to come in the first official trailer, released minutes ago and available in full and in HD below.

You can barely recognize DiCaprio underneath all that fur and facial hair and dirt, as hunter Hugh Glass, a man determined to survive even when all the odds are against him. As for Hardy, except for the clear shot on him when his name is mentioned, you will have trouble spotting him, especially since he doesn’t get a single line in the trailer.

Then again, neither does DiCaprio. This is a story about mad survival, and the trailer reflects that by overwhelming the viewer with action scenes, all shot in natural light, in real harsh winter conditions.

“The Revenant” also features appearances from Will Poulter, Lukas Haas and Domhall Gleeson.
