iPhone X touchscreen becoming unresponsive in cold weather

Device manufacturers don’t typically recommend using their products in cold weather, and the iPhone X makes no exception, though it looks like the anniversary iPhone is suffering from an issue that makes it a lot more susceptible to issues caused by low temperature.

A number of owners have complained that the iPhone X touchscreen becomes unresponsive in temperatures around 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit), with the only workaround currently being unlocking and locking back the device.

Totally surprising, Apple has already acknowledged the bug and said in a statement that a fix is on its way with a future software update. Judging from past cases, bringing software updates to users as fast as possible isn’t exactly Apple’s favorite thing, so it could take a while until that happens. With winter approaching in several regions, however, Apple might have to work against the clock to deliver the fix.

Fix on its way, just don’t hold your breath

“We are aware of instances where the iPhone X screen will become temporarily unresponsive to touch after a rapid change to a cold environment,” the firm was quoted as saying. “After several seconds the screen will become fully responsive again. This will be addressed in an upcoming software update.”

The iPhone X has an operating temperature range of between 32 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit (0 to 32 degrees Celsius), but these are only the recommended values and the device shouldn’t experience any major issues like the touchscreen becoming unresponsive when reaching them.

And the simple fact that Apple acknowledged the bug is living proof this is unexpected behavior, and the software update should address the problems whenever it gets the green light.

In the meantime, you better try to keep your phone warm and buy a case like the one pictured in the article because it appears to be just a matter of time until the iPhone X freezes in low weather.
