Microsoft has just released a new update for SwiftKey, which at this point continues to be one of the best, if not the best, keyboard app for iPhones.

Currently at version 2.1.2, SwiftKey introduces a feature that paves the way for bigger improvements possibly coming later this year after the release of the Windows 10 Creators Update for PCs.

The iOS keyboard app now supports Microsoft accounts, and albeit at first glance this doesn’t seem to be such a big deal, it actually is because it could be the first step towards a cloud clipboard that would work with Windows 10 PCs.

Microsoft has already promised to offer such functionality to have content synced between phones and Windows 10 PCs, and Microsoft Account integration is one of the prerequisites to make this happen. The previous version that was released to the iPhone also integrated a more advanced clipboard feature, enabling users to save multiple items and paste only the one they needed.

Fixes for iPhone 8 also included

In the future, the clipboard could provide cloud support and using Microsoft Account support, to allow users to paste content on Windows 10 devices completely.

In addition to the Microsoft Account support, SwitftKey version 2.1.2 also introduces fixes for accessibility bugs, as well as a patch for a sizing issue on the iPhone 8.

SwiftKey is currently one of the top keyboard apps on both iOS and Android, and the iPhone version alone has more than 13,000 ratings in the App Store, with an overall score of 3.5 stars out of a maximum of 5. The current version, however, is rated 4.5 stars.

The app has one of the best word prediction and autocorrect engines around, offering support for a plethora of languages, emoji, and themes. After Microsoft took over the application, all themes became available for free on both Android and iOS.
