German security institute AV-TEST has conducted a new research to determine the best antivirus solutions for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709), and this time the results are a little surprising.

Just like it happened in the previous tests, solutions from Kaspersky and McAfee top the charts, and this time VIPRE Security also managed to get the maximum score with 18 points.

All three solutions received 6 points for protection, performance, and usability thanks to nearly flawless performance, according to the AV-TEST research.

There are several products that got nearly the maximum score, including here AhnLab’s V3 Internet Security, Avira Antivirus Pro, Bitdefender Internet Security, and Trend Micro Internet Security. All of them scored 5.5 points in one of the three tests mentioned above.

Windows Defender evolving

ESET’s Internet Security got the worst score, which is surprising to say the least given that at some point, this company built some of the world’s most advanced security solutions. The application received only 15 points, namely 5.5 points for protection, 4 for performance, and 5.5 for usability.

On the good side, Microsoft’s Windows Defender performance a lot better than it did in the previous tests, which is living proof that the software giant improves its security product. Windows Defender comes pre-installed in Windows 10 and offers default protection on systems were a third-party solution is not running.

In this new round of tests, Windows Defender was rewarded with 15.5 points, so it outscored ESET’s product, as it received 6 points for protection, 5.5 points for performance, and 4 points for usability.

According to the detailed test results, Windows Defender blocked 98.9% of the 0-day malware attacks in the November research and 100% in the December follow-up, causing a 6 percent slowdown when launching popular websites on a standard PC configuration. For comparison, Kaspersky’s security product got similar scores in the detection of 0-day malware, but caused a 13% slowdown during browsing.
