Since Super Mario Run was launched on the iOS platform last week, Android users have been wondering when the game will land on their favorite operating system.

Unfortunately, Nintendo was pretty vague when asked when it would release the Android version, but at least we know for sure that the game will eventually arrive in the Google Play store.

Until then, we've put together a list of arcade platformers that might keep you hyped until Super Mario Run hits Android. It's worth noting that all five games that we've chosen are available for free in the Google Play store.

Also, they might or might not come with in-app purchases. Super Mario Run for iOS costs $10 (£8), but once you pay this amount, all features are unlocked.

So, let's start with a Super Mario Run clone that seems to have managed to avoid being removed from the Google Play Store. The name of the game is Super Plumber Run and it should be a “fun addictive platform endless running game with a twist.”

Despite the fact that the developer claims this is not a Super Mario Run clone because it has a different premise and works offline, it copies quite a lot of Nintendo's gameplay mechanics.

On its own, it's not the best platformer out there, as the controls could have been better, but with more polishing, it should play well.

Next in line, Smurfs Epic Run is an alternative to Super Mario Run rather than a clone of Nintendo's iOS game. It's available for free, but comes with in-app purchases.

Published by Ubisoft, Smurfs Epic Run is a runner game that features 2D graphics. Players can choose their favorite smurf and begin their adventure to save other smurf from Gargamel.

Run, jump, glide, rush, dash and parkour through more than 100 levels to free all captive smurfs, while defeating Gargamel's minions.

Each smurf comes with his/her unique abilities, but players can also customize them with companions, magic rings and artifacts that offer great bonuses.

Of all the five Android games that we're listing, Ubisoft's Smurfs Epic Run is the more complex and fun to play, but it depends on everyone's taste.

Mikey Shorts is our third choice and one that is simpler than many other games on the list. It comes with more than 80 different levels across two game modes and six unique environments.

The premise of the game is different than the one in Super Mario Run, as players must help Mikey Shorts rescue the people by running, jumping, and sliding through the land.

You'll be collecting coins to buy funny disguises (more than 170 to choose from). Developers have implemented a reward system, so if you finish a level fast enough, you can earn up to 3 stars. The game also features some Golden Shorts, which are hidden levels in the Story mode.

Graphics-wise, Mikey Shorts is a 2D platformer, but it's clean and pleasant to the eye. It also allows players to customize controls and view various game stats.

Adventure Beaks is another platformer where players must assemble their expedition party for “elite Penguin adventurers,” and explore ancient ruins and exotic lands in their quest to find the secret of the Artifacts.

The gameplay mechanics are the same, so you'll have to run, jump, slide, and dive your way through traps, enemies, as well as cavernous mazes.

The game comes with more than 50 levels to explore, each with its own surprise, as well as 16 “brutal” Challenge Levels. Adventure Beaks features 150 side missions and nearly 200 clothing items that players can use to dress their penguins with.

Adventure Beaks is available for free, but features in-app purchases, so if you don't want to spend real money, make sure you disable the feature from the Settings.

Lastly, Lep's World 2 is another free game that comes with in-app purchases. Replace Mario with a leprechaun and you'll get a better idea of what the game has to offer.

Run, jump, glide and slide through 90 levels across 10 unique worlds. The game challenges players in boss fights and 13 types of fierce enemies.

Take control of Lep and embark on an adventure to free all villagers kidnapped by an evil wizard. Gain powerful abilities and items that will help you defeat the evil wizard.

Keep in mind, though, that you only have 3 lives, after which you will have to wait a certain amount of time until they replenish and you can play again.
