Galaxy S10 feature to be enabled on older models too

Samsung Galaxy S10 launched earlier this week with lots of improvements, not only in terms of hardware, but also in the software department, and one of them is a feature to remap the Bixby button.

If you currently own a Samsung flagship, you certainly know how annoying that button has become, especially because officially, the South Korean firm does not allow users to change its purpose.

Unofficially, on the other hand, there were several methods to remap or disable the Bixby button, only that these solutions weren’t really everyone’s cup of tea.

So when the Galaxy S10 debuted this week with an official setting to remap the Bixby button, everyone thought Samsung would just use this feature as another way to entice buyers to get the new flagship.

Good guy Samsung

But as it turns out, Bixby Key Customization, the option that Samsung brought to the Galaxy S10 for Bixby button customization, will be released for previous models as well, according to a press release published by the company earlier today.

This means the Galaxy S8 and S9, as well as the Note 8 and Note 9, will receive this feature too in a future update. They’ll have to be running Android Pie to get it, but that isn’t a problem because both the S9 and the Note 9 has already been updated to Pie, while the S8 and Note 8 are supposed to get it in the next couple of months.

Unfortunately, Samsung hasn’t provided any other specifics on the ETA, other than the following confirmation the feature would be released for older models:

“Bixby Key Customization is compatible with the Galaxy S10, and will be available via a software update on previously released Bixby-enabled flagship smartphones running Android Pie OS.”

The Galaxy S9 and Note 9 will probably be the first to get it, followed by the S8 and Note 8.
