Telegram CEO says a universal app is coming

Telegram is already available on Windows Phone, but with Microsoft putting so much effort into Windows 10 and universal apps, it was only a matter of time until the company joined the bandwagon and tweaked its software to run on both PCs and smartphones.

Telegram’s CEO Pavel Durov confirmed in a very short tweet that the universal app version of the mobile messaging tool is “definitely” coming, thus confirming that Telegram will soon work on PCs and smartphone and offer the same UI and features no matter the device.

Right now, Telegram is the most popular alternative to WhatsApp, and thanks to its security features, more users are willing to give it a choice these days.

Furthermore, with the Telegram API being open, developing third-party clients that would connect to the service is not at all that hard and at this moment, there are several apps that can do that already. But certainly, having the same client that works on both PCs and smartphone, which looks and works the same, could be a really helpful addition to the app portfolio of those willing to give a try to Windows 10.

Unfortunately, not all developers show the same high interest in creating universal apps for Windows 10, but Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella said it takes time for this to happen, especially because this is a new concept and the operating system itself is yet to benefit from a substantial growth.

“This is new. We’ve had different efforts in the past but we now have one store and one app platform. Give us time to keep focused on it,” Microsoft’s CEO told shareholders in late 2015.

Time will tell if universal apps can finally tackle the lack of apps on Windows 10 (the Mobile version in particular), but developer interest for this new approach doesn’t seem to have been that high until now.
