This past Tuesday, a 19-year-old boy in Houston, Texas, accidentally killed himself while attempting to take a selfie he wanted to share with his Instagram buddies.

To spice things up, the teenager thought it a good idea to hold a gun while posing for the camera. Unfortunately, the gun went off.

The incident was witnessed by the 19-year-old's cousin, who was with him at home at the time and who immediately alerted local law enforcement officers.

Paramedics were quick to arrive at the scene. All the same, the teenage boy died from his injuries before anyone could help him.

“HPD patrol officers and HFD paramedics responded to a shooting call the above address and found the victim in a bedroom of an apartment,” reads the police report.

“The victim, 19, was pronounced dead at the scene,” the police officers called in to investigate the accidental shooting go on to detail.

The 19-year-old shot himself in the neck

It is understood that, when the gun went off as the teenage boy was trying to take a selfie with it, the bullet hit the victim in the neck.

The 19-year-old, identified as Deleon Alonso Smith, had no intention to shoot himself. According to his cousin, he didn't even know that the gun was loaded.

“According to a witness, the victim was handling a gun he believed to be unloaded. The gun then discharged and the victim was struck in the upper body,” the police explain.

Following the shooting, the teenager's uncle, Eric Douglas, ran into the apartment and tried to contain the bleeding. As the wounds were too severe, he failed.

When paramedics and police officers arrived, there was nothing left to do but pronounce young Deleon Alonso Smith dead.

Although there is no evidence that the teenager's death was anything other than an accident, an investigation into the shooting is now ongoing, RT informs.

For the time being, it is unclear who owns the gun that the 19-year-old accidentally shot himself with.
