One of the most mediated Twitter feuds in recent months, the one between rapper Nicki Minaj and pop star Taylor Swift over the MTV Video Music Awards 2015 nominations, has been settled. Taylor has apologized for taking Nicki’s comment on racism and discrimination in the media and the music industry personally, and attacking her for it.
In return, the rapper has accepted the apology and claims no harm has been done. Ironically, it’s Katy Perry who came out of this looking good.
Nicki vs. Taylor and how Katy got involved
You can see all the tweets in question below, under those that finally settled the dispute. When the VMAs 2015 nominations were announced, Nicki was upset that her “Anaconda” didn’t get a nod for Video of the Year and she took to Twitter to say that “other girls” with skinnier bodies did get a nomination.
To her credit, she didn’t mention Taylor by name but she couldn’t have been talking about someone else, since the only other female nominated was Beyonce - and we can all agree that she’s not skinny.
Taylor reacted instantly, telling Nicki that she shouldn’t attack her when she (Taylor) had been nothing but supportive of her until then. Taylor’s idea of feminism is that girls shouldn’t put other girls down, even if said “putting down” is part of a larger discussion on racism or justified criticism.
Nicki fought back and said that she wasn’t talking about Taylor (though she probably was), but trying to make a point about how the industry was biased against female black entertainers, who would never get the same recognition as their white counterparts.
Katy got involved the other day, by pointing that Taylor was being a hypocrite for going after Nicki for this reason, since she was actually nominated for a video, “Bad Blood,” that did just that: putting another woman down publicly. In fact, Taylor has a history of doing that.
Taylor backtracks as backlash starts
Taylor Swift has been the industry’s darling for a very long time, but not even she is safe from public criticism, especially when she comes across as terribly wrong as she did now.
Few were those bystanders who took her side in this Nicki Minaj spat, and even less after Katy Perry stepped in to point out the irony of the situation.
Her apology might seem like the result of a good night’s sleep and proper consideration, but it’s probably nothing more than the direct consequence of the swift backlash that was threatening to reach a global scale.
Salon and Gawker both came out with op-eds on how the Taylor Swift era of white faux-feminism and popularity was coming to an end, as she had finally revealed herself for what she truly was. And these are just 2 media outlets of the many that covered the topic. Celebrity bloggers were even more vocal on the issue, welcoming the day when Taylor’s Miss goody two-shoes image would be shattered for good.
For the time being, though, she gets to keep it almost intact, thanks to this apology.
I thought I was being called out. I missed the point, I misunderstood, then misspoke. I'm sorry, Nicki. @NICKIMINAJ

I've always loved her. Everyone makes mistakes. She gained so much more respect from me. Let's move on. https://t.co/mx9pfIdnzT

Finding it ironic to parade the pit women against other women argument about as one unmeasurably capitalizes on the take down of a woman...
— KATY PERRY (@katyperry) July 22, 2015
Hey guys @MTV thank you for my nominations. 😘😘😘 Did Feeling Myself miss the deadline or...?
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
If I was a different "kind" of artist, Anaconda would be nominated for best choreo and vid of the year as well. 😊😊😊
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
U couldn't go on social media w/o seeing ppl doing the cover art, choreo, outfits for Halloween...an impact like that & no VOTY nomination?
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
When the "other" girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that nomination. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

Ironically, I'm shooting a VIDEO today😩
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Oh but trust me. I'll be on that stage to collect my awards for vid of the year. Feeling Myself & Anaconda. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

I'm not always confident. Just tired. Black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it. https://t.co/2xOvJzBXJX

Huh? U must not be reading my tweets. Didn't say a word about u. I love u just as much. But u should speak on this. @taylorswift13
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Nothing I said had to do with Taylor. So what jabs? White media and their tactics. So sad. That's what they want. https://t.co/AfcwoyDvpg
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Ryan posted a headline of Taylor saying she loves & supports me. But not me saying the same to her. Lol. Their headline says I took a "jab"?

I'm so glad u guys get to see how this stuff works. Taylor took her music off spotify and was applauded. We launched Tidal & were dragged.
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
@NICKIMINAJ I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot..
— Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) July 21, 2015
@NICKIMINAJ If I win, please come up with me!! You're invited to any stage I'm ever on.
