The GNOME edition uses the GNOME 3.20 desktop environment

Tanglu Linux developer Matthias Klumpp is proud to announce today the general availability of the final release of the Tanglu 4 GNU/Linux operating system with both GNOME and KDE flavors.

Dubbed Dasyatis kuhlii, Tanglu 4 is here after many months of hard work, during which the small development team managed to put together all the components of the Debian-based operating system despite the fact that the project leader was busy working on different Debian derivatives for the Purism hardware company.

Because of this, it looks like Tanglu 4 doesn't ship with all the latest and greatest software versions as users might have hoped, but it uses the long-term supported KDE Plasma 5.8 desktop environment on the KDE edition. On the other hand, GNOME fans will be disappointed to find out that GNOME 3.20 is used for the GNOME flavor.

A few of the GNOME packages are from the GNOME 3.22 Stack, though, and to cheer you up a little, Tanglu 4 ships with out-of-the-box support for UEFI installations without using the Legacy mode, which is possible thanks to the implementation of the Calamares installer. But Secure Boot support is not yet available.

Future Tanglu releases to come as both rolling and stable branches

While not yet official, it would appear that this is the last release of the GNU/Linux distribution to ship in this form, as the Tanglu development team is planning to split the development of the distribution in rolling and stable release branches, just like OpenSuSE does with Tumbleweed and Leap.

"That way, the distribution will become much easier to maintain for a small team (a rolling-release branch requires less manpower to maintain). By aligning our stable releases with Debian, we will also greatly reduce the maintenance cost of stable releases by benefiting from Debian's security support," reads today's announcement.

Of course, the stable Tanglu branch will be based on the Debian Stable repos, while the rolling release will use Debian Testing packages. That being said, we invite you to download either the Tanglu 4 KDE or Tanglu 4 GNOME editions right now from our website if you want to try out this Debian-based operating system on your personal computer.
