14 DAY TRIAL // Matthias Klumpp informs the community about the availability of the first Beta build towards the Tanglu 4 "Dasyatis Kuhlii" GNU/Linux operating system, due for release later this year.
Tanglu 4 "Dasyatis Kuhlii" Beta is distributed with the usual flavors, including with the KDE and GNOME desktop environments. A Core edition is available as well, designed for those who want to build their own Tanglu-based GNU/Linux distribution.
Under the hood, all Tanglu 4 Beta editions are powered by a kernel from the Linux 4.6 series, along with the systemd 229 init system, but each one incorporates some of the latest open-source technologies that correspond to their user base.
For example, the Tanglu 4 Beta KDE Edition ships with the KDE Plasma 5.6 desktop environment, and the Tanglu 4 Beta GNOME Edition with the GNOME 3.20 desktop. However, known issues are still present, and you should be aware of them when testing.
"Known issues for the Beta include the live-installer only launching from terminal in the GNOME flavor, and the GNOME flavor not showing GDM if run in VirtualBox, unless you boot with 'quiet splash' removed from the kernel command line," says Matthias Klumpp.
Mesa 3D Graphics Library 12.0 coming soon
The development cycle of the Tanglu 4 operating system will continue with a second and third Beta milestone, as well as a Release Candidate (RC) build, which should be made available to the public in the coming weeks and months.
During this development cycle, the Tanglu developers announced plans to move to the latest Mesa 3D Graphics Library 12.0 release, as well as to upgrade the kernel packages to a new stable version (possibly Linux kernel 4.7).
As expected, the OS remains based on Debian GNU/Linux, and the final Tanglu 4 release should hit the streets sometime at the end of the year. Until then, you can download and test Tanglu 4 Beta KDE and Tanglu 4 Beta GNOME and Core editions right now.
