Today, August 2, 2016, the development team behind Tails, the amnesic incognito live Linux operating system based on Debian GNU/Linux, has proudly announced the release of Tails 2.5.

Tails 2.5 is a bugfix release that has been in development for the past two months and updates various core components to make sure that your privacy and anonymity are always 100% guaranteed when you stay online. Therefore, today's Tails update comes with the TOR Browser 6.0.3, which is based on Mozilla Firefox 45.3, and Icedove 45.1.

The new Icedove version fixes the "The message could not be sent using Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.riseup.net for an unknown reason" error that prompted users when attempting to send an email, as well as a bogus error message that was displayed when creating a new email account, and an issues with the automatic account configuration when attempting to connect to certain email providers.

Tor Browser improvements, time synchronization fixes

Among other changes implemented in the Tails 2.5 update, we can mention that the time synchronization problems reported by users since Tails 2.4 have been resolved by decreasing the timeout and replacing some unreliable and obsolete time servers. Moreover, the graphics performance of the Tor Browser has been greatly improved thanks to the implementation of KVM virtual machines with QXL video.

Tails 2.5 is available for download right now via our website, and you can also upgrade from Tails 2.4.
