The development team behind the Debian-based Tails amnesic incognito live system announced the release of the Tails 2.9.1 anonymous Live CD, which ships with the latest Tor technologies.

Still based on the Debian Stable repositories, namely on Debian GNU/Linux 8.6 "Jessie," Tails 2.9.1 is the first maintenance update to the 2.9 stable series, bringing updates for most of the pre-installed components, such as Tor 0.2.8.10 anonymous network client/server implementation and Tor Browser 6.0.8 anonymous web browser.

Talking about TOR Browser, it looks like this first point release of Tails 2.9 switches the default search engine to DuckDuckGo, replacing the Disconnect.me one, which was already configured to redirect users to DuckDuckGo in previous releases of the Live CD. DuckDuckGo is perfect for protecting your anonymity while searching stuff online.

"This release fixes many security issues and users should upgrade as soon as possible. Switch to DuckDuckGo as the default search engine in Tor Browser. The previous default search engine, Disconnect.me, has already been redirecting to Duck Duck Go for some time," reads the announcement.

Tails 2.10 currently scheduled for landing on January 24, 2017

In Tails 2.9.1, users will also find the latest Mozilla Thunderbird-based Icedove 45.5.1 email and news client, as well as the obfs4proxy 0.0.7 tool for circumventing censorship when using the Tor anonymous network. A few bugs reported by users since the Tails 2.9 release have been resolved as well.

For example, there's a workaround that makes Tails work in a VirtualBox-based virtual machine if you upgrade the Guest Additions to version 5.1.8. Also, documentation has been added to inform users that I/O APIC is needed when starting Tails in VirtualBox. The AppArmor profile for the Totem (Videos) media player was fixed as well.

Now that Tails 2.9.1 is out, the development team can concentrate their efforts on the next major version of the Linux-based operating system for staying online anonymously, Tails 2.10, which is currently scheduled for landing on January 24, 2017. Until then, you can now download Tails 2.9.1 from our website or update your installations.
