Aussie rapper caps off disastrous year with mentor’s public admission that she’s almost impossible to manage

The strangest thing is happening to Iggy Azalea’s career: though she emerged as one of the biggest and most promising artists of last year, she spent the past few months getting media attention mostly for her celebrity feuds (many of them playing out on Twitter), a canceled world tour, and talk of cultural appropriation.

The other day, rapper T.I., who discovered and signed her and who had managed her career since the start, announced on radio that he had cut all professional ties with her. In fact, he said, he and Iggy hadn’t been in contact since last year, when she and Q-Tip got into a very nasty and highly mediated Twitter spat.

If this is news to you, as an Iggy fan, don’t fret: it’s also news to Iggy.

T.I. says he’s done with Iggy

T.I. stopped by Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning show and discussed a variety of things, from his next project to his most recent feuds, and of course, his relationship with Iggy. That last topic comes up at around the 2.14-minute mark in the video below.

He says he and Iggy no longer have a professional relationship, having decided to cut all ties after the Q-Tip feud she got into last year. Q-Tip accused her of cultural appropriation and schooled her on the history of hip hop in over 30 tweets.

T.I. knew this would make the news and that it had the potential to turn bad for her protégée, so he reached out to Q-Tip offline and got him to chill. He also informed Iggy of what he’d done, but instead of playing by the rules, she went behind his back and responded to Q-Tip on Twitter.

To her credit, T.I. says, Iggy has been through a lot, more than any other artist on the scene right now, particularly a female rapper. But she still was impossible to manage and difficult to work with, so he decided he no longer wanted this kind of aggravation in his life.

Considering this wasn’t the only feud he defended her in and that he also stepped in when she got chatty on Twitter, to her detriment, to Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Azealia Banks, Nicki Minaj and Britney Spears, no wonder he’s grown tired of the same routine.

Iggy says she had no idea she and T.I. were done

It didn’t take long for Iggy to respond to this, and as you can see in the tweets below, she’s doing it on her favorite channel of communication, Twitter.

She says that, despite T.I.’s claims, she’s still signed to his label and they’re still working together. She claims she had no idea their professional relationship had been severed, so if it was, it looks like T.I. forgot to inform her about it.

Perhaps even more strange than her response is a report in TMZ, which claims that the two have actually stopped working together sometime in 2013, one full year before she put out her biggest hits to date.

However, they remained on friendly terms and he continued to cash in on her success, because of a contact they signed that guarantees him a cut of everything she makes for having discovered her.
