SystemRescueCd developer François Dupoux has announced the release and immediate availability for download of the first maintenance update for the SystemRescueCd 4.8.x series.

SystemRescueCd 4.8.1 comes one and a half months after the debut of the major SystemRescueCd 4.8 branch, and it promises to update both the standard and alternative kernels to Linux kernel 4.1.30 LTS (rescue32 and rescue64) and Linux kernel 4.4.17 LTS (altker32 + altker64).

Additionally, the first maintenance release in the SystemRescueCD 4.8 series updates the FSArchiver filesystem archiver tool for GNU/Linux operating systems to version 0.8.0, the Partclone backup and restore utility to version 0.2.89, and btrfs-progs Btrfs file system utilities to the new 4.6.1 build.

NetSurf replaces Midori as default web browser

Another important change implemented in the SystemRescueCd 4.8.1 Live CD is the replacement of the Midori web browser with NetSurf, an open-source, lightweight and portable web browser that uses its own layout engine. NetSurf is known to work not only on GNU/Linux and Mac OS X systems but also on other Unix-like platforms.

As expected, you can download the latest SystemRescueCd 4.8.1 ISO image right now via our website. The 32-bit Live ISO image can be booted on both 64-bit (x86_64) and 32-bit (x86) computers, and the tools included in the Live CD can be used by system administrators for all sorts of backup, recovery, and rescue operations.

The best part of the SystemRescueCd project is that it works independently of a computer operating system. You can write the ISO images on a USB flash drive or CD/DVD disc, which you'll use to boot from the respective PC where you want to make a system backup or recover the broken OS.
