The rights to the System Shock franchise are at the moment in the hands of a company named Night Dive Studios, and a new remake is now being built.

There aren't many games that remain in the public consciousness for two decades, but System Shock is definitely one of them. Built initially by Looking Glass Studios, the game gained a cult status over the years, and spawned a second game, which is also quite famous. Since now is a good time to do remakes of old games, it looks like the original System Shock is also coming back.

Some old games still work, and it's not difficult to make them functional, but System Shock was released all the way back in 1994, for DOS, so it's not going to be an easy port. Even more, the developers from Night Dive Studios intend to do a remake of the original, which is more than just making it work on modern systems.

Different from System Shock: Enhanced Edition

The same studio released System Shock: Enhanced Edition, which is just basically the original version with support for 1024x768 and 854x480 widescreen mode, mouselook, and remappable keys.

According to a report on fastcompany.com, "Night Dive is developing a full remake of the original System Shock, going well beyond the basic rerelease that launched a couple months ago. Night Dive has acquired the full rights to the franchise, and Kick says he’s been working with Robert Waters, the game's original concept artist, to reimagine his designs from the early 1990s."

What's even more interesting is that the developers are also targeting the consoles as a possible platform and that's a really interesting business model. It's very likely that many of the current console owners have no idea of what's System Shock and just how old it really is.

There is no time frame for this release, but we'll probably hear more about it in the coming months.
