The Synaptic Package Manager, an open source piece of software that is being used in various GNU/Linux distributions to install, remove and update software packages, has been updated today to version 0.83.

According to the internal changelog, which we've attached at the end of the article for reference, Synaptic Package Manager 0.83 is mostly a bugfix release that resolves over seven issues reported by users since the previous version and also gets rid of some GTK-related issue.

But first, let's start with the good news, the new features, that is, as Synaptic Package Manager 0.83 now explicitly requires the latest GTK3 GUI toolkit for its graphical user interface, which will be modern and compatible with the most recent standards. Additionally, this build removes support for certain GTK widgets, such as GtkHandleBox and GtkStock in GtkBuilder UI definitions.

The deprecated gtk_widget_modify_bg(), gtk_widget_modify_font(), gtk_widget_modify_base() and gtk_widget_get_style() functions have been removed as well. Moreover, the deprecated GtkHPaned and GtkVPaned widgets have been ported to GtkPaned, GtkHButtonBox and GtkVButtonBox to GtkButtonBox, GtkImageMenuItem to GtkMenuItem, and GtkHSeparator to GtkSeparator.

Bugfixes, lots of bugfixes

As mentioned, several bugs have been squashed in this new release of the Synaptic Package Manager, such as a three annoying warnings, an issue with the id data type of Xwindow, a problem with the attribute name for GdkRGBA, a toolbar style bug, as well as an issue with the toolbar wrapper box name. An unused parameter has also been eliminated from this release.

Synaptic Package Manager 0.83 should be available in the default software repositories of various GNU/Linux distributions that use the software as the default package manager tool, in the coming days. Until then, if you can't wait, you can download the Synaptic Package Manager 0.83 sources right now from our website and start compiling by hand.
