Linux is becoming a more popular alternative to Microsoft’s Windows, mostly thanks to the platform altogether evolving into a more user-friendly ecosystem, but the one thing that users are very often afraid of is the time spent to get everything right when making the switch.

Windows users who don’t consider themselves tech-savvy might have a hard time migrating to Linux regardless of the chosen distro, and this is exactly what the team behind Linux Mint tried to tackle.

Linux Mint has often been referred to as the most user-friendly alternative to Windows, and now it can truly become this thanks to a detailed step-by-step installation guide that the developing team put together on the official website.

Available in English and French right now, the guide will soon be translated to many more languages, the Linux Mint admins say adding that some other guides are also in the works, including an overview of the distribution, a developer guide, and a troubleshooting and bug reporting tutorial.

These should all help create a much more detailed Linux Mint User Guide replacing the original one, truly making the transition from Windows to Linux an easier process.

The growth of Linux and decline of Windows

While Linux is growing, Windows continues to be the leading choice for desktop PCs worldwide, though the efforts that developers are making on the open-source front should at least worry Microsoft.

According to third-party data provided by NetMarketShare, Windows is now the number one operating system on the PC with a share of 88.39%, while macOS is the runner-up with 9.05%. Linux is third with 2.21%.

And while the difference between Windows and Linux is still huge, the gap is slowly being reduced, especially as Microsoft’s desktop operating system fell below the 90% threshold that it owned for more than a decade. It’ll take many more years until Linux can challenge Windows’ market share, but with guides like this, there’s no doubt that more users would at least consider switching to Linux.
