Today, June 30, 2016, SUSE has had the great pleasure of announcing the availability of a public beta release of its upcoming, commercial SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 Service Pack 2 operating system.

For the first time ever, SUSE brings its enterprise-ready Linux kernel-based operating system to public beta testers, thanks to its new Open Beta program, where everyone can get early access to the improvements and new features SUSE implemented in each new Service Pack build of its SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) products.

"The exciting infrastructure capabilities in Service Pack 2 will help keep customers ahead of the innovation curve," said Raj Meel, SUSE product marketing manager. "To introduce these capabilities more widely, we've made this a truly open beta, not just for customers only. All developers, users and Linux community members can try out Linux kernel 4.4 updates in a top enterprise distribution, seeing firsthand how it will continue to help them meet the changing needs of their businesses."

GNOME 3.20, Linux kernel 4.4 LTS, and more

SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 Service Pack 2 is promising a great number of updates and new features to customers running the SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 SP1 operating system. Among these, we can mention DPDK (Data Plane Development Kit) to bring enterprise production support for Open vSwitch, thus improving its performance by more than 12 times, along with the ability for users to skip upgrades of prior SUSE Linux Enterprise Service Packs and go straight to SP2.

Additionally, SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 SP2 will bring support for the latest Intel Skylake processors, the GNOME 3.20 desktop environment, the long-term supported Linux 4.4 kernel, the TPM (Trusted Platform Module) 2.0 secure cryptoprocessor standard for better security, expanded clustering capabilities thanks to the support for extra DRBD (Distributed Replicated Block Device) nodes, and a revamped Hawk2 user interface. SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 Service Pack 2 Beta is now available for download for 64-bit, s390x, and PPC64le hardware architectures.
