SUSE, through Raj Meel, was pleased to announce the release and general availability of the third Service Pack of the SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 commercial operating system designed for enterprises.

The SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 release has a 13-year life cycle, and SUSE promises to offer ten years of general support, as well as three years of extended support for all customers. And SP3 is here to boost the efficiency and security of the operating system, on which the free and open-source OpenSuSE Leap OS is based, as well as to add several new features and the latest GNU/Linux technologies.

"As always, our customers want options—and Service Pack 3 provides lots of them. Enterprises that need to accelerate innovation require an agile infrastructure that can scale workloads responsively to meet increasing demand," said Raj Meel, Global Product & Solution Marketing Manager at SUSE. "At the same time, they need to improve efficiency, reliability and security."

Here's what's new in SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 Service Pack 3

SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 Service Pack 3 widens the range of supported hardware and virtualization offerings, adds support for Intel’s latest Xeon processor family and AMD's EPYC and Ryzen processors, increases the workload size and data transaction support for very large SAP HANA workloads on POWER systems, and increases data security and optimizes workloads on IBM z Systems.

With a focus on the optimization of IT infrastructures and in attempt to elevate SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 "zero downtime" motto, the third Service Pack simplifies cluster implementation and improves geo recovery management, improves the management of high availability environments, and makes it faster to get started with Geo Clustering and High Availability extensions.

To expand the security capabilities of the OS, SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 Service Pack 3 ships with support for TPM (Trusted Platform Module) 2.0, as well as expanded key server support for SAP system volumes thanks to the implementation of the KMIP industry standard. This release also increases the performance of SAP apps, database performance with NV-DIMM block device support, and improves the performance of apps with NVMe and NoF support.

SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 Service Pack 3 is available for all existing customers on 64-bit Intel, AMD, and ARM (AArch64) hardware, as well as IBM z Systems, SAP HANA, and POWER-based servers, NVM (Non-Volatile Memory) Express over Fabrics, and across various public cloud infrastructures. More details on how to get SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 Service Pack 3 can be found in the release notes.
