CIRP (Consumer Intelligence Research Partners) released on Thursday the results of a new research study on the mobile phone operating system consumer behavior in the United States.

The new research study conducted by CIRP was based on Google's Android and Apple's iOS mobile operating systems, showing how users remained loyal to one or the other over several years. More precisely, the survey reveals the fact that between January 2016 and December 2017, Android users were the most loyal compared to iOS users.

According to the research, Android user loyalty was between 89 and 91 percent during the period above, while iOS user loyalty was only between 85 and 88 percent. CIRP finds the user loyalty for Google's Android and Apple's iOS mobile operating system, which are currently the most used worldwide amongst smartphone and tablet users, to remain steady during this period.

"CIRP finds that between Android and iOS, loyalty to each has remained steady since early 2016, at the highest levels seen," reads the research. "Android has a 91% loyalty rate, compared to 86% for iOS, measured as the percentage of customers that remain with each operating system when activating a new phone over the twelve months ending December 2017."

Android and iOS user loyalty sees an increase in the last years

CIRP Co-Founder and Partner Mike Levin said that Android and iOS user loyalty saw an increase in the last years, more precisely in 2015 and into 2016. After that, in 2017, the user loyalty remained pretty steady for both mobile operating systems in the United States, though Apple's iOS never managed to beat Google's Android, which is more versatile and cheaper for smartphone manufacturers.

Even so, CIRP says that Android and iOS user loyalty is currently at its highest, which means that the fight between the two mobile operating systems will be over those who will switch from one to the other as at this point customers choose to invest their money and time on only one OS, and stick with it for the long run. This also means Google and Apple will have to find new ways to attract customers.
