The fact that Samsung is actively working on a foldable smartphone is not a surprise, especially since recent reports have indicated that the new smartphone is already in testing. It’s unclear when the smartphone will actually arrive, while some say that a small batch could be released next year.

A Samsung-branded smartphone has just passed through the WiFi Alliance and received its certification, and we have reason to believe that it’s the Galaxy X prototype. The smartphone carries the codename SM-G888N0, while the N0 moniker refers to a device intended for the market in South Korea.

SamMobile reports that the SM-G888N0 in question is actually a Galaxy X prototype, the foldable smartphone that Samsung has been working on for some time now. Another device with a similar codename surfaced last year and it was believed to be the Galaxy S7 Sport, carrying model number SM-G880.

However, the rumors didn’t materialize and its codename was actually Haechi, a mythical beast that portrays a unicorn with a lion’s head. It would thus seem suitable for the Galaxy X, since the smartphone can take more than one appearance and fold out as a tablet. Interestingly, the SM-G888N0 runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, but the final product will surely run the latest Android version.

But other reports say that the new WiFi certified smartphone is actually the Galaxy S8 Sport, which could arrive at Sprint. We recently reported that the Galaxy S8 Active was in the works, and there is a possibility that the Galaxy S8 Sport could also arrive soon.

At this point, there’s no way of saying for sure if this SM-G888N0 device is the actual Galaxy X, but since Samsung already started testing prototypes, it could very well be the real deal. We’ll just have to wait for other reports to surface and corroborate this. The Galaxy X could see a very limited release later this year, although broader commercialization will most likely happen in 2019.
