How long will it take to have a new record?

We all know Super Mario Bros., and we like to think that at one point we were pretty good at it. Finishing the game without losing a single life would be cool enough for some people. Others like to do speed runs, and now a new world record has been set for Super Mario Bros.

After so many years of Super Mario Bros., speed runs have become almost an art. All the tricks are known, all the shortcuts are taken, and all the glitches are incorporated. Every pixel is accounted for and everything that can be done is being done. It's now all about reaction time and a little bit of luck. In fact, setting a new world record for Super Mario Bros. is really difficult and new times usually improve by hundredths of a second.

Even if the new record is just marginally better than the previous one, it's still impressive. The guy who pulled it off, darbian, said that he also made some mistakes, which only means one thing. There will be someone out there or even himself that can improve on that time even more.

Beat Super Mario Bros. in four minutes, if you can

Finishing Super Mario Bros. just by jumping from one level to another with the help of warping is difficult, but darbian is doing much more than that. Almost every step that he takes in a level needs to be in a precise place and lost or gained time is measured in frames. He explained the entire course on Reddit.

"The biggest remaining time save is to add in the faster method of doing level 4-2. This method of doing 4-2 saves 21 frames (0.35s), but is extremely difficult. andrewg is the best person at getting this. As far as I can tell, final room with Bowser was perfect. My previous PB had lost a couple frames from hitting the axe a bit too far to the right," wrote darbian.

You can check his speedrun in the video below, and you can dust off that old NES and see if you have what it takes to even come close. It was done in 4:57.62 minutes. The previous record was 4:57.69.
