No new updates to be released for Windows devices

Subway Surfers is the last big title that waves goodbye to Windows phones, as the game will no longer receive other updates due to Microsoft’s lack of commitment to the mobile operating system.

In a customer email response obtained by German site WindowsArea, parent company Kiloo explains that Cairo was the last update for Subway Surfers on Windows 10 Mobile, with no other improvements to be released to devices running Microsoft’s platform.

On the other hand, the game will continue to run just like before on Windows phones, but once you remove it, there’s no way to get it back as the Store listing would be pulled.

“Thanks for being a loyal player on the Windows platform! Unfortunately, Cairo is the latest update for Subway Surfers on the platform. You can keep enjoying the game, but we are not releasing further updates, due to the development plans of the platform owner,” the email reads.

Windows 10 Mobile’s demise

The “development plans of the platform owner” that the email points to is actually Microsoft’s strategy of focusing less on Windows phones. The software giant admitted in late 2017 that no new features and Windows devices are planned with Windows 10 Mobile, so the platform is currently in maintenance mode until mid-2019 when security updates will no longer be provided either.

Rumor has it that Microsoft might still be working on a new mobile device, only that it won’t be a phone per se, but a tablet/laptop/possible phone that could support multiple form factors thanks to a revolutionary hinge and foldable displays.

The software giant has remained tight-lipped until now on such a project, but it’s believed the unveiling could take place rather sooner than later, with some suggesting this could happen by the summer. In the meantime, however, Microsoft also sells Android phones, should any Windows phone fans be looking for a new device.
