Also only 6% of all developers are women

A recent market study from VisionMobile offers a deep insight into the developer world, as it was at the end of July 2015.

According to a survey 13,000 developers from all around the world have answered, one of the main findings is that only 6% of all respondents are female.

This comes to reinforce recent rumblings in the development community, portrayed as a secret male society that doesn't seem to like women in its ranks.

Cloud-based projects bring in the dough

The survey's results also show that working with cloud services allows you to earn more money, closely followed by desktop projects, and mobile app development, while working on IoT (Internet of Things) projects will get you the least money.

Since we brought cloud services into the discussion, Amazon Web Services is the most popular amongst developers, followed by Microsoft Azure, the Google Cloud Platform, Digital Ocean, and Heroku.

AWS is mainly preferred for Java and PHP apps, Azure for C#, Google's Cloud Platform for Java, Digital Ocean for PHP, while Heroku caters to Ruby and JavaScript (Node.js) developers.

The Android market is still the favorite

On the mobile development market, 26% percent of developers tend to create apps for Android and iOS, 28% only for Android, 12% solely for iOS, while only 11% of all mobile developers support all three major platforms (Android, iOS, and Windows Phone).

The study also found out that 10% of mobile developers use e-commerce as a revenue model, while 46% use advertising as the main source of money for their projects.

When it came to the volatile and unexplored world of IoT, developers seem to be as confused as the end users, the study revealing that most developers create products for consumers (32%), followed by those who cater for enterprises (17%), employees (13%), and professionals (12%).

The weird thing is that 26% of all respondents also answered that they still didn't know who their target audience was. That kind of explains why IoT brings in the least money. Doesn't it?
