Stephenie Meyer, the author of the best-selling trilogy of novels “Twilight,” which spanned the even more successful movie franchise with Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, is not done with the characters of Edward the vampire and Bella the brooding human.

In fact, for the 10th anniversary of the books, she has quite a surprise for the fans: a new version of the story, in which the protagonists’ genders are swapped. So while in the original book, we had a male vampire and a female human, now we’ll have a male human and a female vampire, but pretty much the same story.

Meyer made the announcement on ABC’s Good Morning America, which you can see in the video below. “Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined” is told from the perspective of the human Beau, who falls for the beautiful vampire Edythe. It will be out in hardcover and ebook this week.

As for what prompted Meyer to revisit the story that put her on the map, she tells GMA that it wasn’t about money: it was more about proving the haters wrong. The character of Bella Swan has gotten Meyer under serious fire many times, because she was nothing but a damsel in distress, who, to boot, was caught in an abusive relationship.

By making Bella a man, as Beau, Meyer aims to show the world that this was never the case, because the story still maintains its appeal if the roles are reversed. We will see, won’t we?
