14 DAY TRIAL // Today, July 29, 2016, Valve announced the availability for download of a new stable version of its Debian-based GNU/Linux operating system designed for gaming, SteamOS 2.87.
After being in the Beta stages of the development for the past two months, SteamOS 2.87 is now the latest stable and most advanced version of the gaming OS developed by Valve for personal computers and Steam Machines. It comes as a replacement for the previous stable release, SteamOS 2.70, announced back in April 2016.
Prominent new features of SteamOS 2.87 include the availability of updated Nvidia and AMD Radeon graphics drivers, version 367.27 and AMDGPU-PRO 16.30 respectively, which now offer support for the recently announced Nvidia GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 GPUs, as well as for the "Bonaire" GPUs.
"The new AMD driver is ONLY enabled if you have a "Bonaire" GPU. We will be enabling the new driver for other GPUs as AMD completes testing. If you have problems or bugs with the new driver, please report them to AMD's Steam Linux forum[community.amd.com] which AMD will be monitoring," reads today's announcement.
Latest Debian security updates are now available in SteamOS 2.87
Besides the updated Nvidia and AMD Radeon graphics drivers, SteamOS 2.87 comes with a huge number of updated components, borrowed, of course, from upstream. After all, the distribution is based on the Debian GNU/Linux 8 "Jessie" operating system. There's also a new Linux kernel version and all the latest security patches.
Among the updated software implemented in SteamOS 2.87, we can notice Apache, DPKG, Evince, Expat, Iceweasel, libarchive, libgd2, initramfs-tools, Jansson, imlib2, libidn, libksba, libndp, librsvg, libtasn1-6, libxml2, libxslt, lvm2, MySQL 5.5, OpenSSH, OpenSSL, p7zip, Perl, Samba, tzdata, xapian-core, and VLC Media Player.
