It’s not a surprise that Windows Phone is collapsing, as Microsoft is doing basically nothing to save its mobile platform for the time being, and now new statistics coming from AdDuplex confirm that Redmond’s mobile operating system is going from bad to worse.

Windows 10 Mobile is currently running on just 20.3 percent of the Windows phones out there, and this isn’t at all a surprise. The operating system is only available for some 50 percent of the phones running Windows Phone, and availability was substantially impacted once Microsoft rolled out the Creators Update. Only 13 models were marked as fully compatible with the Creators Update.

Windows Phone 8.1, on the other hand, continues to be the top version of Microsoft’s mobile operating system, and it’s running on 73.9 percent of all devices. Its share, however, is dropping, and Windows 10 Mobile isn’t getting any new users, which means that most people running Windows Phone and jumping ship are going to either Android or iOS.

This totally makes sense given that the majority of developers are also switching focus to rival platforms, and now users are also switching sides because as it turns out, they can’t live without apps.

“Windows 10 Mobile is now on more than 20 percent of Windows phones, but it’s likely caused by Windows 8.x users abandoning their phones for other platforms, rather than any increase in Windows 10 Mobile sales. With Facebook Messenger, and now Skype, abandoning WP8, it’s not unlikely that this trend will accelerate as time goes on,” AdDuplex says.

Surprisingly, Windows Phone 8.0 is still being used on 4.2 percent of devices, while Windows Phone 7.x has a share of just 1.6 percent.

As for what’s next for Windows phones, nothing is certain at this point, but everyone seems to hope Microsoft to bring something new to the market, especially on the hardware front. A reboot for Windows 10 Mobile is reportedly in the works as we speak, along with a new device that could be the eagerly-awaited Surface Phone.
