Disney bought the rights for the “Star Wars” franchise a while back, and as promised, they set off to work immediately to bring the universe, expansions and all, back into theaters for old fans and new segments of the audience.

The first film that will reboot the series, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” comes out in theaters this December, and a new installment, either a sequel or a spinoff, will follow on a yearly basis. Needless to say, Disney has huge plans for “Star Wars.”

“Star Wars” will be shattering records, most definitely

Deadline believes that they will get off to an incredible start, possibly shattering gross records for the opening week. As of the time of writing, the leader is this year’s “Jurassic World,” the biggest release of the summer, which opened to $524.4 million (€465.3 million) globally in its first weekend.

“Force Awakens” will probably top that, with industry insiders estimating that it will probably open to more than $615 million (€546.2 million), half of it from US theaters and half from international territories.

“Insiders say that in any given 20-plex in December, Force Awakens will be on at minimum 10 screens,” Deadline writes. “Like Jurassic World’s success this summer, the key driving force to Force Awakens remains its multi-generational appeal. Disney has smartly planted the film in the year-end holiday corridor when families head to the cinema in bulk.”

“The Force Awakens” has all the makings to be a success

In addition to having an established fanbase, which has been waiting for this reboot since the final installment came out in 1983, “The Force Awakens” is also getting plenty of positive buzz online, with signs indicating that it’s also deemed very appealing by non-fans.

In short, industry people estimate that the film will rule the box office until the end of January, by which time it could actually bring down a few more gross records, much like James Cameron’s “Avatar” did in 2009.

And speaking of online buzz, here’s the latest teaser that’s been making waves online.
