The third installment in the “Star Trek” franchise hasn’t had a smooth sailing, even though Hollywood usually moves very fast when it comes to proven recipes of success, like this particular franchise. The first installment came out in 2009, with the follow-up out in 2013, and the third one scheduled for a summer 2016 release.

During the pre-production stage, “Star Trek 3” lost a director and then a writer, and then another director and another writer. In its current form, it’s being helmed by Justin Lin of the “Fast & Furious” fame and Simon Pegg is working on a new draft of the script.

Lin was the one to make the official title public, with a simple tweet, which included a photo of the Starfleet patch. You can find it below.

“Star Trek Beyond,” which is also the title widely circulated in trade publication and fansites (the first one was “Star Trek Forever”), will bring back the cast from the first 2 films, including Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho and Anton Yelchin.

Idris Elba is the newest addition, presumably as the villain.

Rumor has it that Pine and Quinto’s contracts are up after this one, so if the studio doesn’t want to break up the Captain Kirk - Spock team, it will have to dig deep in their pockets to lock them down for future installments.
