The space sim might not deliver on its ambitious ideas

Star Citizen is one of the most ambitious video games currently in development, but some former and current employees of developer Cloud Imperium Games are saying that the process is troubled and the game that was promised to fans might never be actually launched.

The Escapist has managed to talk to the game makers who are willing to discuss the problems linked to the title and says that only 8 million dollars (7.5 million Euro) remain from the more than 82 million dollars (78 million Euro) that were raised from the community.

The report also says that more and more features are added to the core vision for Space Citizen despite the fact that the company is not yet able to deliver on the ones that were initially promised to the community.

There are also allegations of bad behavior inside the company and some sources are saying that leader Chris Roberts bought his new home using development money.

So far, the development team at Cloud Imperium Games has only delivered limited demos of the video game, which is supposed to offer a complete space simulation experience.

At the same time, the company is continuing to accept pledges from gamers and is selling a wide variety of content on its official site, including starships that are priced at more than 100 dollars or Euro.

Chris Roberts says Star Citizen is in good shape

The leader of the Cloud Imperium Games states in a response that the development process is in good shape at the moment and will not be derailed by reports from disgruntled employees that do not have a clear idea of the situation.

He adds, "We have a very large team, most of which share my passion and dream. Yes, there will always be people who don’t fit in with the work and dedication that the dream demands and some of them will be resentful when they part ways, but I am in this to make something that will stand the test of time, much like Wing Commander has."

He addresses a number of other issues in his lengthy response to The Escapist, which involves a lot of references to Derek Smart and the ethics of game journalism.

Star Citizen is set to deliver more demo content to backers in the coming months and the video game is expected to see a full launch at some point in 2017.
