Hackers insult EA after hacking Square Enix Twitter account

Square Enix is the latest company to have their Twitter account compromised, with a hacker group called cyberwolfgang managing to take control of the handle and badmouth EA and some of their most popular games.

Hackers maintained control of the official Square Enix Europe account for nearly three hours, during which they bragged about their hacking skills and mocked rivals such as EA for their games.

“I am the greatest hacker alive… Someone hire me LOL,” one of the tweets read. “FIFA is such a s**t game LOL RT,” another one added. The hacker eventually tweeted that Square Enix “hate white people so much,” while a compromised Just Cause account continued with a message that read “#cyberwolfgang everywhere!!!”

Additionally, the hacking group also attempted to block followers of the account, with the account eventually having nearly 50,000 followers, down from 150,000 before the hack.

3-hour long hack

Square Enix managed to regain control of their Twitter account approximately 3 hours after the first tweet went live, and in a series of tweets, the company apologized both to its followers and companies that received nasty messages from hackers.

“Sorry about that folks, that shouldn't have happened. Thanks for your support and understanding over the past few hours,” the first tweet posted by Square Enix after taking back control of its Twitter account read.

EA UK, which is one of the companies that was targeted by hackers with offensive tweets following the compromise of the account, also responded to the message posted by Square Enix.

“Nice to see you back to normal, glad you're feeling better,” EA UK tweeted. “Aww thanks, we weren't ourselves for a bit there. (*^_^*) We do <3 you really!” Square Enix replied.

At this point, it’s not yet known how exactly the account got hacked, but there’s a big chance that it was all because of a simple password that was possibly used for other accounts as well, such as the one for Just Cause. Everything’s back to normal now, and followers are no longer blocked.
