On January 5, 2016, the developers of the SparkyLinux computer operating system were extremely proud to inform us about the immediate availability for download of the first development milestone of the upcoming SparkyLinux 4.2 Budgie Edition OS.

Built around the Budgie desktop environment from the Solus Project, which is used by default on the Solus Linux operating system and based on the repositories of the Debian GNU/Linux 9.0 "Stretch" distribution, SparkyLinux 4.2 Budgie Edition is now in development, shipping with Budgie Desktop 10.2.1 installed on top of a SparkyLinux 4.2 base.

"There are new, testing iso images of SparkyLinux 4.2 Budgie Desktop. Sparky 4 is based on and fully compatible with Debian testing 'Stretch.' [...] Feel free to test it and report bugs (if any) and your suggestions on our forums. You can also install Budgie on the top of an existing Debian testing/Sid or Sparky installation, installing 'budgie-desktop' package from our repos," reads the announcement.

Powered by Linux kernel 4.3

Shipping with an up-to-date set of applications borrowed from the rest of the SparkyLinux "Home" editions and powered by Linux kernel 4.3, SparkyLinux 4.2 Budgie Edition was synchronized with the Debian Testing software repositories as of January 4, 2016.

The system includes a highly customized version of the Budgie desktop environment with the Next-Aurora GTK+3 theme. However, being a development release, some bugs are present, such as the inability to set any wallpaper after the installation, which needs to be manually set via GNOME Control Center.

Solus's Budgie Desktop is being adopted by more and more GNU/Linux distributions. We've reported earlier on the availability of Manjaro Linux Budgie 16.01 Edition, which ships with Budgie Desktop 10.2.2, but today you can download the SparkyLinux 4.2 Budgie Edition operating system from Softpedia. Please keep in mind, though, that it's a pre-release version, not suitable for production use.
