14 DAY TRIAL // We reported earlier this month that Google might allow non-Nexus devices to download the Android N developer preview builds that it released until now.
Although we knew that would happen soon, we did not have any details regarding the smartphones that will be eligible for Android N developer preview. We assumed that companies like Motorola, HTC or LG could be among the first to enter the Android N beta program.
To our surprise, the first non-Nexus device to support Android N developer preview is Sony Xperia Z3. The information has just been confirmed by Google, which also stated that those who own the smartphone can now download the preview build from Sony’s website.
“To get started, you can download the latest N Developer Preview from Sony (currently Developer Preview 2, available at the link below) and manually flash it to your device. You’ll then receive future Developer Preview updates over-the-air, direct from Sony,” explains Google.
More devices could be included in the Android N beta program soon
Along with Sony Xperia Z3, the following Nexus devices are compatible with Android N developer preview build 2: Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, the Pixel C tablet and General Mobile 4G (Android One).
The good news is Google states that it will continue to work toward offering Android users more options for early testing and development on N developer preview. Basically, this means that we can expect more non-Nexus devices to join the list of Android N beta program.
Google hasn’t yet decided how to name the next version of Android, which is why it’s been designated a letter. We also don’t know when exactly the first release will be unleashed on the market, but we believe more details on these matters will be provided at Google I/O, scheduled to start on May 18.
